How to read a role the way the person who created it does.
The candidate mindset is the most expensive habit in your career — and no one ever told you to drop it.
Skills get you shortlisted. Vision gets you chosen.

Stop checking yourself against a list. Start thinking like the executive who approved the hire.
Most Directors read a job description and ask one quiet question: "Do I have these skills?" That question keeps you on the outside — waiting to be picked.
Executives read the same page and ask something else entirely: "Why does this company need this role right now?"
The playbook walks you through it on three real roles, one level up from where you are. Don't apply — not yet. Work through four parts for each:
Read between the lines
Why does this role exist at all? What changed in the business — and what breaks if they hire no one?
Name the business priorities
Every senior hire is a bet with real money on the table. Work out the result they're actually betting on — past what the job description says.
Define what success looks like
Sit in the GM's chair, twelve months on. What makes them say "hiring you was one of the best calls we made"? Write down results you can measure.
Your unique value
Why you — over another leader with the same résumé? Not your years. What you see, do, or lead differently that actually solves the problems you just mapped.
You stop getting ready for interviews — and become the person a company already sees as the answer.
